Guide for students
What is Transnational Education?
TNE , Transnational Education , means studying for a degree from a university in a different country to the one awarding it. Earn a UK, Australian, Canadian or US degree without leaving your home region. For a comprehensive independent guide to TNE quality and standards, visit tneinstitute.com →
Why does TNE matter?
Instead of spending £20,000+ per year studying in the UK, you might study the same degree at an overseas campus for significantly less, with lower living costs, no UK visa complexity, and a much shorter flight from home. The degree awarded is identical. Employers recognise the awarding institution , not where you physically studied.
Important: Always verify that the TNE campus is accredited by the national body in the delivery country and that the degree is formally awarded by the home university. TNE Institute only lists programmes where both conditions are confirmed. For detailed guidance on TNE quality frameworks, visit tneinstitute.com.
The four main TNE delivery models
🏛
Branch Campus
A university opens a full physical campus in another country under its own brand. The parent university controls curriculum and awards the degree.
e.g. University of Birmingham Dubai, CMU Africa (Kigali)
🤝
Franchise Programme
A local institution delivers a programme designed by an overseas university, which awards the degree and maintains quality control.
e.g. A local college delivering a University of Hertfordshire programme
🔗
Joint / Dual Degree
Two universities collaborate on delivery. Students may receive degrees from one or both institutions on completion.
e.g. Joint MSc awarded by a UK and East African university
💻
Online / Distance
Full programme delivered online. Study from anywhere. The degree carries the same weight as an on-campus award.
e.g. University of London Worldwide BSc
How is quality assured?
🏆
Same Degree Award
The certificate is issued by the home university. Non-negotiable for reputable TNE.
📋
Curriculum Control
The home university controls curriculum, assessments and marking throughout.
🔍
External Review
UK programmes reviewed by the QAA. Australian by TEQSA. Regular mandatory inspections.
🌍
British Council Register
Public register of UK TNE activity , a primary verification source used by TNE Institute.
📊
Employer Recognition
Major employers evaluate the awarding institution, not delivery location. A Birmingham degree is a Birmingham degree.
⚠️
What to Watch For
Avoid programmes where the awarding institution is unclear or where the local partner issues the degree.

Who we are
Powered by TNE Institute
Something fundamental has shifted in global higher education. Students are no longer passive recipients of what universities choose to offer them. They are informed consumers , and the smartest ones are finding that the rules have completely changed.
⚡ The Amazon Moment for Education
Amazon didn't just make shopping cheaper. It fundamentally transferred power from retailers to consumers , giving people access to more choice, more information, and more value than ever before, without leaving home.
The same shift is happening in higher education right now. A student in Lagos, Nairobi, Accra or Port Louis can today access a University of Birmingham degree in Dubai, a Carnegie Mellon degree in Kigali, or a London School of Economics degree online without the extortionate UK living costs, the visa lottery, or the 12-hour flight. The degree on their CV is identical. The cost is dramatically lower.
Most students don't know this yet. TNE Institute exists to change that.
Students are now in charge
For decades, the international higher education market worked on one model: students paid whatever universities asked, moved wherever universities were located, and navigated opaque information systems designed to serve institutions, not learners.
That model is breaking down. Students now have the voice, the choice, and , critically , they hold the financial power. Universities that want to grow internationally must come to students, not the other way around. The explosion of overseas campuses, online degrees, and transnational partnerships is direct evidence of this shift.
TNE Institute is built on a simple conviction: every student deserves to make their biggest investment decision with complete, accurate, unbiased information. Not brochure copy. Not a recruitment agent's pitch. Real data on real costs, real rankings, and real pathways.

Canadian universities have historically been reluctant to open overseas branch campuses — the 2025 Policy Options report confirms they are only just beginning to explore this model, driven by the sharp cap on international students in Canada itself.
